SketchUp for Interior Design: From Floor Plan to Furnished Room
Every interior designer has lived this moment: you present a beautifully rendered floor plan, the client nods enthusiastically, and then the sofa arrives on delivery day and it blocks the door. SketchUp exists to prevent that moment. This guide walks you through the complete workflow — from importing a floor plan to populating a room with real-scale furniture — so you can show the client exactly what they're getting before a single piece ships. You'll also learn how to use tags and scenes to present multiple layout options in the same model, and how to decide what to model yourself versus what to pull from the 3D Warehouse. By the end, your floor plan meetings will run faster, your clients will say yes more confidently, and your sofa will fit.
Why SketchUp Works for Interior Design (When Other Tools Don't)
Interior designers have more 3D tool choices than ever in 2026 — and most of them are overkill. Revit is brilliant for construction documentation but aggressively punishes anyone who just wants to try a different couch position at 9 p.m. the night before a client meeting. Chief Architect is powerful but expensive and steep. The AI renderers are beautiful but they lie about dimensions. SketchUp sits in the middle: it is accurate enough to trust, fast enough to change, and cheap enough that you can actually use it across your whole practice.
The key insight, articulated well in Lydia Sloan Cline's SketchUp for Interior Design, is that SketchUp is fundamentally a space and proportion tool. You're not rendering — you're testing. Can the dining table rotate to seat eight? Does the sectional leave enough clearance for the sliding door? Is the island proportionally right for that ceiling height? These are questions a 3D model answers in minutes and a 2D floor plan can't answer at all.
Best for: interior designers, space planners, residential architects, kitchen and bath designers, anyone who needs to convince a client with a 3D walkthrough rather than a drafted plan.
Step 1: Set Up Your Template for Interior Work
Before you model anything, save yourself ten minutes per project by creating a proper interior design template. Go to File → Save as Template after doing the following:
Set units to decimal inches (or millimeters if you're working metric). For interior work, the precision matters.
Turn on Model Info → Components → Show component axes. You'll be placing furniture constantly; seeing which direction a component faces before you click saves a lot of rotate-and-redo.
Set Camera → Perspective as your default. Parallel projection is useful for floor plans but confusing for client presentations.
Add a tag called
furniture, one calledwalls, and one calledfixtures. You'll build the whole model in these three categories.
Save this as Interior_Design_Template.skp. Open it for every new project, never Untitled.skp.
Step 2: Import the Floor Plan (The Right Way)
Interior designers almost always start with an existing floor plan — either a PDF from the architect or an AutoCAD DWG from the contractor. Here's how to handle each without losing your mind.
From AutoCAD DWG: Go to File → Import, select your DWG, and use the import options to bring it in at full scale with your model units. SketchUp will import it as a flat group of edges. Lock that group immediately (right-click → Lock) and assign it to a tag called reference. This is your trace layer — it should never move, never be edited, and never be exported.
From PDF: Export the PDF page at 300 DPI as a JPG or PNG. Then use File → Import and place the image on the ground plane. Before tracing, you must set the real-world scale. Draw a line over a known dimension (a door width, a wall length), then use the Tape Measure tool (T): click one end of your drawn line, click the other, type the real dimension in the Measurements box, and hit Enter. SketchUp will ask if you want to resize the model — say yes. Now every line you trace from this image is at true scale.
Pro tip: Always check your import scale against two different known dimensions before you start tracing. Architects occasionally rescale PDFs when printing. If your door width and your room width don't both match, the drawing has been scaled and your model will be wrong everywhere.
Step 3: Model the Walls, Doors, and Windows
With your floor plan reference in place, trace the interior walls using the Line tool (L) or Rectangle tool (R). For most residential interior work:
Exterior walls: 6 inches (150 mm)
Interior partition walls: 3.5 inches (89 mm) — standard 2x4 stud
Wet walls (plumbing): 5.5 inches (140 mm)
Push/Pull each wall face up to the finished ceiling height. For a standard residence, that's 9 feet (2743 mm). Assign all wall geometry to the walls tag.
Doors and windows are best handled with components, not raw geometry. Either model a simple door slab (a flat rectangle the right size, hinged at the frame edge), or pull from the 3D Warehouse. The value of a component is that every instance updates together — if you decide all interior doors should be 3 inches wider, change the component definition once.
Watch out for: SketchUp's sticky geometry will happily merge your wall faces into each other if you model walls as raw geometry. Always wrap each wall in a group or component immediately after Push/Pull. Right-click → Make Group the moment you complete a wall. This is non-negotiable for interior work where walls share faces constantly.
Step 4: Build and Place Furniture (The FF&E Workflow)
This is where interior designers either love SketchUp or walk away from it — and the difference is entirely about how they handle furniture. There are three sources for furniture components:
3D Warehouse: The fast path. Search by manufacturer name (Herman Miller, West Elm, Restoration Hardware) or category (lounge chair, dining table, sectional). Quality varies wildly. Before placing anything, open the component, check its actual dimensions in Model Info → Components → Statistics, and verify it matches the spec sheet. A "king bed" in the Warehouse might be 76x80 inches or might be 60x72 depending on who modeled it.
Import from manufacturer: Several high-end furniture brands (Knoll, Steelcase, Humanscale) publish their own SketchUp components for specification. Download directly from their websites. These are accurate by definition — the company does not want their furniture misrepresented in client models.
Model it yourself: For custom or bespoke pieces, or when you need a specific finish configuration, model it from scratch. A sofa is simpler than it looks: it is a seat cushion (rectangle + Push/Pull), a back cushion (rectangle + Push/Pull leaned with Move), and two arm panels. The whole thing takes fifteen minutes. Use Make Component when done (G key), name it precisely ("Restoration Hardware Cloud Sofa 102in Slipcover Ivory"), and save it to your personal component library.
Pro tip: Build a personal component library folder for each project type — residential living room, primary bedroom, open-plan kitchen. Over time, this library becomes your fastest asset. A furnished 1,200 sq ft apartment that would take a junior designer two days to model takes you two hours.
Step 5: Use Tags and Scenes for Multiple Layout Options
Here is the move that transforms a SketchUp model from "a 3D floor plan" into "a presentation tool that closes projects." Interior designers frequently need to show a client two or three layout options in the same meeting. Tags and scenes make this trivially easy.
Tag structure for layout options:
layout_A_furniture— all furniture in option Alayout_B_furniture— all furniture in option Bwalls— always visiblefixtures— always visible
Now create a Scene (Window → Scenes → Add +) for each layout:

The scene tabs appear across the top of the SketchUp window. During a client meeting, you click between them. The furniture configuration changes instantly. According to the SketchUp for Interior Design workflow, this is exactly how the software is intended to be used for space planning: present options, get feedback in real time, save the scene they choose.
Best for: any client presentation where you want to show "what if we tried it differently" without rebuilding the model. Also useful for showing before/after renovation states in the same file.
Step 6: The FF&E Decision Matrix — What to Model vs. What to Reference
Every interior designer doing space planning hits this question: do I need to model everything, or is that wasting my time? The answer is proportional to risk.
Model at full 3D: anything whose size, clearance, or visual mass determines a design decision. Sofas, dining tables, kitchen islands, primary bedroom furniture, bathroom fixtures if they're custom. If a client might ask "can I see that from the other side," model it in 3D.
Model as a flat placeholder: secondary furniture and accessories — side tables, task chairs, coffee table books stacked on a credenza. A flat rectangle at the right dimensions placed in the right position conveys "this space is accounted for" without the modeling time. Tag these as placeholders and keep them in a neutral gray material.
Reference only (don't model): decorative objects, throw pillows, artwork. These live in the specification document, not the model. The model is for decisions about space and proportion. A throw pillow does not affect whether the sectional clears the sliding door.
Watch out for: the 3D Warehouse seduction. It is extremely easy to spend 40 minutes downloading and placing detailed accessory models that add no design value and significantly slow your file. Every component you add increases model complexity. Be ruthless.
Step 7: Present the Model — Camera Positions, Shadows, and Walkthroughs
Once the room is furnished, the final step is setting up the client presentation. Interior design presentations work best with three camera positions:
Floor plan view: Camera → Standard Views → Top, then Parallel Projection. This lets you export a clean top-down plan for the spec document.
Eye-level perspective: stand the camera at approximately 5 feet (1520 mm) high, looking into the room from the main entry point. This is the "first impression" view — what the client will actually experience when they walk in.
Corner view: camera positioned in one corner looking across to the opposite corner. This is the view that best reveals furniture scale relative to ceiling height and wall proportion.
Save each of these as a scene. Turn on shadows (View → Shadows) and set the time to late afternoon for warm, oblique light across the furniture. SketchUp's default shadow engine is enough for client buy-in; you do not need a render plugin to make space planning decisions.
If the client wants a walkthrough, use Camera → Walk (W key) and step through the room at eye level. Record it with a screen capture tool if needed.
