The SketchUp Solid Tools Survival Guide: Outer Shell, Subtract, and the Pro-Only Five
Six boolean tools that turn 'add this lump to that lump' into a repeatable habit — once you know what counts as a solid.
If you've ever built a wall, dropped a window-shaped block into it, hit Subtract, and watched the wall vanish entirely — congrats, you've met the Solid Tools. They are the closest SketchUp gets to magic: a single click that fuses two shapes, cuts one out of another, or finds the exact volume two lumps share. They are also, in the words of every veteran modeler, the blunt instruments of 3D — useful, fast, and capable of nuking a perfectly good model in one wrong-order click. This guide is the rule book nobody hands you. Six tools, six "what counts as a solid" rules, and the two tools (Subtract and Trim) where order matters so much that getting it backwards eats your geometry alive. By the end, you'll boolean like you mean it.
First, the brutal truth about boolean operations
Aidan Chopra, in SketchUp For Dummies, drops a quote that lives rent-free in my head. About boolean operations he writes: "If you take a class in 3D Modeling, they'll be the first thing you'll learn, and then you'll be told to never use them ever again."
That's the whole vibe. Booleans are powerful, but they're also (his words) "the blunt instruments of 3D. They work within a narrowly defined set of parameters, and are notorious for the way they indifferently modify geometry." In other words, they will do exactly what you asked, even if what you asked was to delete your roof.
Real talk: I love the Solid Tools. I use them daily. But I learned to respect them after one specific evening that I refer to as The Outer-Shell Incident. We'll get to that. First, the rule that everything else hangs on.
What "solid" actually means in SketchUp (and why the tool grays out)
You can't use Solid Tools on stuff that isn't a solid. Sounds obvious. Isn't. SketchUp's definition of a solid is unforgiving, and you'll spend more time fighting this rule than learning the tools themselves.
Straight from Aidan Chopra: "A solid is nothing more than an object that's completely enclosed. It has no holes or other gaps; if you filled it with water, none would leak out." The watertight test. Every edge in a solid must be bordered by exactly two faces. Not one (that's a hole). Not three (that's a stray internal wall). Two. Forever.
There are six things you have to know about solids. Memorize these or live in a perpetual loop of grayed-out Solid Tool buttons:
Watertight or it isn't a solid. Tiny gap somewhere? Not a solid.
No extra edges or faces allowed. A single stray edge poking through the surface disqualifies the whole thing. (Yes, this happens to everyone.)
Only groups and components can be solids. Loose geometry will never be a solid, no matter how watertight it looks. You have to wrap it in a group or component first.
Solid groups/components can't have other groups/components nested inside them. This rule alone breaks more booleans than every other rule combined. Flatten before you boolean.
Check Entity Info to confirm. Select your group or component, open Window → Entity Info, and look at the top. It will say either "Solid Group" or "Solid Component" — or just "Group" / "Component" if it failed the watertight test.
Solids can be made of multiple disconnected blobs. As long as each blob inside the wrapper is fully enclosed, the whole thing still counts as a solid. (This one feels weird until you've used it on purpose.)
Pro tip: If a solid keeps failing the watertight test and you can't see why, install Solid Inspector2 by Thomas Thomassen from the Extension Warehouse. It draws colored highlights on every offender — stray edges, missing faces, internal pockets you forgot about. Aidan Chopra himself can't overemphasize its usefulness, and neither can I. Don't ask how I know.
The six tools, in plain English
Here they are, in the order I actually use them. Five of these (everything except Outer Shell) are SketchUp Pro only — that's not me being mean, that's the official Aidan Chopra line: "Five of the six Solid Tools are only in the Pro version of SketchUp." If you're on Free, you get Outer Shell and that's it. Fair warning.
Outer Shell — Combines two or more solids into one solid. Deletes overlapping geometry and internal pockets. The "make this one big lump" tool.
Union — Same as Outer Shell, but preserves internal pockets. Use when you've intentionally modeled a hollow inside a solid (think: a bottle with a cap).
Intersect — Keeps only the volume two solids share. Deletes everything else. Useful when blocking out cars, sculpted shapes, or any "carve from three orthographic views" technique.
Subtract — One solid bites a chunk out of another. Deletes the cutter when it's done.
Trim — Same bite, but keeps the cutter. Use when you need that cutting block again on the next side.
Split — Cuts two overlapping solids into three solids: their two non-overlapping parts plus the shared overlap. Aidan Chopra's hot take: "Using Split is like using both Subtract and Intersect on your solids... you might want to use Split full-time. It's easier to keep track of what's going to happen." He's not wrong.
To open the toolbar: View → Toolbars → Solid Tools. Or grab them from Tools → Solid Tools in the menu. Pin the toolbar somewhere; you'll use it a lot.
Watch out for: if you don't see five of these tools (or only see Outer Shell), you're on the free version. That's not a bug. That's the licensing model.
The trap that ruined my Tuesday: Subtract vs. Trim, and why order matters
Most Solid Tools follow what Aidan Chopra calls the standard path: "The easiest way to use the Solid Tools is to preselect the solids and then choose the tool to carry out the operation." You select your two cubes, click Union, done.
Subtract and Trim do not follow that path. From the same chapter: "The glaring exceptions to this rule are the Subtract and Trim tools; both of these depend heavily on the order in which you pick your solids."
Here's the rule that took me three tries to internalize: the first thing you click is the cutter. The second thing you click is the thing being cut. SketchUp even helps you by labeling your cursor — it shows a little 1 when you're picking the cutter, then changes to a 2 when you're picking the target.
Translation:
Window-shaped block first → wall second = wall gets a window. Correct.
Wall first → window-shaped block second = block gets a wall-shaped chunk taken out of it, and the wall is gone. Incorrect, painful, and surprisingly common.
Pro tip: Trim has a quietly amazing trick. After you pick your cutter (cursor shows 2), it stays as 2 for as long as you keep clicking new targets. So if you've modeled a wooden box bottom and want to cut a dado (groove) into all four sides, you pick the bottom once, then click side one, side two, side three, side four. One tool, four cuts, no re-picking. This is the move that turned me into a Solid Tools believer.
Watch out for: Subtract deletes the cutter when it's done. If you need to keep the cutter (because you're going to use it on the next wall, or the next leg of the chair, or the next anything), use Trim instead. Same operation, the cutter survives. Future-you will thank you.
The Outer-Shell Incident: when one click eats your model
Now the war story. Once upon a time, I had a kitchen model — about two hundred groups, lots of cabinets, intersecting trim, the whole thing. I thought, "I'll just select all and hit Outer Shell. It'll fuse everything. Clean. Beautiful." (Come back when you're done screaming.)
This is not just my mistake. Aidan Chopra wrote the warning so verbatim it sounds like a confession: "You may have been looking at the Outer Shell button in the Solid Tools menu and thinking, 'Wow, making this into one outer shell is going to be easy.' So you decided to save your work, select your whole model, and click Outer Shell. Oops."
What happens, mechanically: Outer Shell tries to run a long chain of boolean operations in sequence — fuse, then fuse the result, then fuse that result, and so on. After a few iterations on anything more complex than simple primitives, the boolean engine starts compounding its own errors. Faces flip. Edges duplicate. Internal pockets appear out of nowhere. "After being confounded by the sum total of its own mistakes, it gives up in failure."
The lesson is not "don't use Outer Shell." The lesson is don't use Outer Shell on the whole model at once. Use it on small clusters. Two or three solids. Confirm the result is still a solid (Entity Info will tell you). Then — only if you need to — outer-shell the next cluster. Boolean operations are like fasteners: tighten in stages, never lean on one big yank.
Watch out for: if you've already pulled the trigger and your model is hash, Ctrl+Z is your friend. If you saved over a backup before you noticed (don't ask how I know), the CleanUp³ extension by ThomThom can salvage some of it by removing duplicates and merging coplanar faces. But you should be running CleanUp³ as a habit anyway. Future-you will high-five present-you.
When Solid Tools refuse to cooperate, even though everything looks right
You've checked Entity Info. It says "Solid Group." Both objects are solids. You preselected them. You clicked Union. SketchUp made a little processing animation… and then nothing happened. Or worse, it returned a non-solid result.
Yes, this is a thing. A few of the most common causes, in order of how often they bite me:
One of your "solids" has a nested group inside it. This is the silent killer. Entity Info will still report "Solid Group" because the wrapper itself is watertight. But the moment you boolean it, SketchUp gets confused by the inner wrapper and the operation either fails or eats geometry. Fix: explode any nested groups first (right-click → Explode), then re-check that the parent is still solid.
Coplanar faces don't quite touch. Sometimes a face you swore was on the same plane is actually 0.001 inches off. Boolean operations need real overlap. Fix: move one solid into the other slightly, even by 1mm, so there's actual overlap volume to work with.
The shapes are too complex. Curves with hundreds of segments, lots of small intersecting bits — the boolean engine has a tolerance budget and you've blown it. Fix: simplify before you boolean. Reduce circle segments, merge coplanar faces with CleanUp³, then try again.
You're working on a single instance of a multi-instance component. Here's the gotcha that surprises everyone: as soon as you use a Solid Tool on a component, "SketchUp makes that instance unique; it's still a component — it just isn't connected to the other instances anymore." If you wanted all instances cut, you needed to edit the component definition first.
Pro tip: if a boolean fails for no obvious reason, undo, run Solid Inspector2 on both objects, fix whatever it flags, and retry. Nine times out of ten the issue is a single stray edge or a hidden internal face. The tenth time you simplify and try again. There is no eleventh time.
Three habits that keep your Solid Tools clean
These are the habits the war stories above paid for. Steal them.
Wrap before you boolean. Always. The instant you finish modeling a part, triple-click to select it, right-click → Make Group, check Entity Info. If it says "Solid Group," you're cleared for booleans. If it doesn't, fix it now while the geometry is still fresh in your head, not later when it's buried in a model.
Use Trim by default. Use Subtract only when you mean it. Trim keeps both objects, which means you can experiment, undo less, and reuse the cutter on multiple targets. Subtract burns the cutter — that's a deliberate choice you should make on purpose, not by reflex.
Run CleanUp³ once a day on big models. Not because you're sloppy. Because every SketchUp model accumulates duplicate faces, split edges, and tiny stray geometry the longer you work in it. Solid Tools hate all three. Five seconds of CleanUp³ saves an hour of "why won't this Subtract work."
Wrap-up
The Solid Tools won't make you a better modeler. Habits will. The tools just speed up what good habits already enable: clean geometry, watertight groups, deliberate cuts, and small steps instead of one big yank on the whole model.
If you only remember three things from this post: watertight is the law, first click is the cutter, and never Outer Shell the whole model at once. The rest you can look up. The rest you can fix with Ctrl+Z. Those three rules are the ones that bite hardest if you forget them, and the ones future-you will be most grateful for.
